a period is when a person has a monthly bleed.

Introduction:

It’s a common question we get asked here at Roam - can you have sex on your period? The answer is yes, you absolutely can. Some people who bleed actually enjoy sex the most when they’re on their period, as there’s a bit more lubrication there, and it can help ease cramps. For others, it’s not something they want to do, and that’s fine too!

We’re just here to help you understand that it’s safe (so long as you use protection), and normal to have sex while on your period if you wish to do so.

What is a period?

Although this should be covered in sex ed, it’s not always clear what a period is. So, to start at the basics - a period is when a person has a monthly bleed. The bleeding is someone shedding the lining of their womb and it is part of a normal monthly cycle. It generally lasts for 3-5 days but can be much longer or shorter.

Some types of contraception mean that periods stop (e.g., the coil). Folks who have the coil inserted don’t have to worry about sex on their periods, but some of us do!

Is it dirty to have sex on your period?

No! There’s absolutely no shame in wanting sex on your period or having it. It might be a little messier for you and your partner(s), but periods are normal and natural. There’s nothing to be afraid of, and there’s nothing ‘dirty’ about it.

If you do want to have sex on your period, you may want to consider putting a (dark) towel down to save your sheets. If you’re using toys as part of your sex, you’ll also want to make sure they get a good wash after use (as they always should!)

What if my partner wants to have sex whilst they are bleeding, but I don’t?

We suggest talking about why you both do or don’t want sex is the most important thing. Whether it’s about period sex, or any type of sex. Communicate, communicate, communicate. With this particular topic, be sensitive to the person who is bleeding. Do not make them feel like you find them less attractive when they bleed, or that you think period sex is dirty. Talk to them in a respectful way about your worries and concerns, and you’ll find a compromise. Equally, if they are the one that is not interested in having period sex, respect this and see if they are open to other forms of sex – e.g., performing oral, or mutual masturbation.

Do I need contraception if I have sex whilst bleeding?

Yes, keep practicing safe sex even when bleeding. For period-havers, some will be fertile whilst they are bleeding or just afterwards. Equally, period blood does not protect against STIs/STDs, so, it’s always sensible to make sure contraception’s sorted.

Here at Roam, we believe if it feels good, you’re doing it right. So, if period sex is something you enjoy then got for it. If not, that’s also fine.

Like most sex, we think period sex is great, and we encourage you to try it!
